Chapter 15

Fury nearly choked him.

Once Clarice had left the room, Drew had taken his anger out on the little box, which had once contained a tiny fresh fruit tart of kiwi slices, strawberries, blueberries and raspberries, which he’d carefully made, before throwing the box away. He’d really hoped to surprise her tonight and he knew who had stolen that pleasure from him.

He dialed Gladys’ number.

“Do you know what time it is?” she demanded when she answered the phone.

“I know exactly what time it is,” Drew said in a soft voice.

“Oh.” Her tone turned wary. “Is something wrong?”

“How many times have I told you not to help yourself to food in my kitchen? I’ve made it clear the items you can touch.”

“But I didn’t—”

“I opened the box.”

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

“I thought I’d get enough time to replace it,” she said in a rush. “I just took one little tiny taste but then it left a space so I thought to even it out by taking a little more and before I knew it, it was all gone. I’ll pay you.”

He ground his teeth. He was getting real tired of people offering him money when they annoyed him. But if she wanted to pay, he wouldn’t stop her. “You’re lucky it wasn’t my red velvet.”

“What?”

“Never mind. You owe me twenty-five.”

“Cents?”

He didn’t reply.

“You can’t mean dollars!”

He still remained silent.

“Twenty-five dollars! It was just a little tart.”

“I’m also charging you for pain and suffering. It was meant to be a gift. Bye.” He cut off her protests by disconnecting the call.

Clarice nodded to his cell phone. “I couldn’t help overhearing. You’re not really going to charge twenty-five dollars, are you?”

“Yes, and I’m being generous.” His frown increased when she smiled at him. “What’s that expression for?”

“Just the thought that you made me something makes me happy, especially since…” Her smile dimmed; she turned. “I have to go.”

He grabbed her arm and forced her to face him. “Especially since what?”

“It’s nothing.”

“Tell me.”

She lowered her gaze. “You’ve made it clear that your private life is none of my business, but,” she lifted her gaze, “why did you keep pretending you were still with Jennifer? Do I make you so uncomfortable that you have to lie—?”

He didn’t let her to finish, covering her mouth with his in a way that left her breathless. When he drew away she stared at him stunned.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

Clarice swallowed, her heart thundering. “Sorry that you kissed me?”

A quick grin came and went. “No, that I didn’t tell you sooner. Don’t ask me why. I don’t know.” He snaked an arm around her waist and pulled her close. When he spoke his voice was barely a whisper. “But I do know one thing. How much I want you.” He kissed her again.

“What did you make for me?” she asked against his lips.

“A fruit tart.”

“I think you taste better.”

He pressed his lips against her throat, his breath warm against her skin when he spoke. “We’ll conduct a taste test later.”

“It may take a while.
